Kansas IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence

Undergraduate Coordinator Office

The overall goal of the Undergraduate Coordinator Office is to increase and strengthen efforts to acquaint undergraduates with biomedical research on all campuses involved in the K-INBRE and to develop seamless career pathways leading to a career  in biomedical research. The K-INBRE’s exceptional record of mentoring undergraduates was documented in the publication “Assessment of the impact of the Kansas IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence program on undergraduate participation in research” (Journal of Microbiology and Biology Education; 3:40-47. (PMID:24432200; PMC3890248). This office will:

  1. Solicit and qualify programs submitted by the 10 Campus Coordinators to attract and retain promising students into biomedically-related science majors and to involve these students in cutting edge research;
  2. Assist the Coordinators at K-INBRE participating institutions in implementing their programs;
  3. Work with the Communications Core Director to continue and expand communication to trainees through networking via the videoconferencing network;
  4. Assist the PI and staff in the implementation of symposia and workshops where students can present their research and hear research presentations by internationally recognized scientists;
  5. Supervise the award of funds to support Summer Scholars, Translational Research Scholars, Community Based Scholars, Bioinformatics Scholars, and Star Trainees.
